Overview

What is Bol.com?

Bol.com is the largest online retail platform in the Netherlands and Belgium, serving over 13 million active customers and hosting more than 52,000 third-party sellers. Originally founded in 1999 as an online bookstore, Bol.com has expanded into a full-fledged marketplace covering categories from electronics and home & garden to toys, fashion, and pet supplies. Since its acquisition by Ahold Delhaize in 2012, the platform has grown significantly, processing hundreds of millions of orders annually and generating billions of euros in gross merchandise value. For brands and retailers targeting Dutch and Belgian consumers, Bol.com is the dominant marketplace and often the first channel to consider.

Listing products on Bol.com requires compliance with the platform's strict content and data quality standards. Every product is identified by an EAN (European Article Number), and sellers must match their offerings to existing product pages or create new ones with complete and accurate information. Bol.com places a strong emphasis on product content quality, using an automated Content Quality Score that evaluates titles, descriptions, images, attributes, and categorization. A higher Content Quality Score directly translates to better search visibility and higher placement in Bol.com's search results, making optimized product data a critical competitive advantage for sellers.

Bol.com provides a comprehensive partner ecosystem through its Partner Platform (partnerplatform.bol.com), which includes tools for inventory management, order processing, performance analytics, and advertising. The platform supports product data submission through manual entry in the Partner Platform, bulk CSV uploads, and a well-documented Retailer API (v10) for automated integrations. Bol.com also offers Logistics via Bol.com (LVB), their fulfillment service similar to Amazon's FBA, which handles warehousing, shipping, and returns. Integrating a PIM system with Bol.com enables sellers to maintain consistent, high-quality product content that meets the platform's stringent requirements while automating feed updates and ensuring accurate stock synchronization across channels.

Listing Requirements

Bol.com Listing Requirements

Required and optional fields for product listings on this marketplace

Required
11
Product Title
250 characters (70 recommended for optimal display)

The product title is the primary element for search visibility on Bol.com. Titles must follow the format of Brand + Product Type + Key Feature + Variant and should clearly describe the product without promotional language, special characters, or unnecessary repetition. Bol.com recommends keeping titles concise and informative. Titles that do not follow the prescribed format or contain forbidden elements like pricing, stock status, or superlatives (e.g., 'best', 'cheapest') will negatively impact your Content Quality Score.

Format: Brand + Product Type + Key Distinguishing Feature + Variant
Example: Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra Smartphone - 256GB - Titanium Black
Product Description
2,500 characters

The product description should provide a comprehensive yet scannable overview of the product, including key features, benefits, materials, dimensions, and usage instructions. Bol.com supports basic HTML formatting (bold, unordered lists, paragraphs) to improve readability. Descriptions must be written in Dutch for the Dutch market and may optionally include French for Belgium. Do not include contact information, URLs, competitor references, or shipping details in the description. Well-structured descriptions with clear formatting significantly improve conversion rates and Content Quality Scores.

Format: Plain text with optional limited HTML (bold, bullet lists, line breaks)
Example: De Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra combineert een krachtige Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor met een prachtig 6.8 inch Dynamic AMOLED display...
Product Images
Up to 8 images per listing

Bol.com requires at least one product image, but strongly recommends uploading multiple high-quality images to maximize conversion. The main image should show the product clearly on a white or light neutral background without text overlays, watermarks, or promotional stickers. Additional images should display the product from multiple angles, in real-life usage contexts, and with close-ups of important details. Bol.com's image requirements specify a minimum resolution of 500x500 pixels, but 1500x1500 pixels or higher is recommended for optimal display quality and zoom functionality.

Format: JPEG or PNG; minimum 500x500px (1500x1500px recommended)
Example: Main image: product on white background, clearly visible. Additional: multiple angles, in-use lifestyle shots, packaging, detail close-ups
EAN (European Article Number)

Every product listed on Bol.com must have a valid EAN barcode. The EAN is the primary identifier used to match seller offers to product pages. If a product page with your EAN already exists, your offer will be added to that existing page. If no product page exists, you can create a new one by providing complete product content along with the EAN. EANs must be obtained from GS1 and must be unique to the specific product (including variants like size or color). Invalid, duplicate, or misassigned EANs will result in listing rejection.

Format: EAN-13 (13 digits) or EAN-8 (8 digits)
Example: 8710103993285
Price

The selling price must be entered in euros and include VAT (BTW). Bol.com displays the consumer price inclusive of Dutch VAT (21% standard, 9% reduced rate for certain categories). Sellers must ensure their pricing complies with Bol.com's pricing policies and Dutch/Belgian consumer protection laws. Prices that are significantly above market average may trigger warnings, and deliberate price gouging during high-demand periods is prohibited. Sellers can also set strike-through reference prices for promotions, but these must reflect genuine previous selling prices.

Format: Numeric value in EUR with up to two decimal places
Example: 24.99
Product Category

Products must be assigned to the most specific category within Bol.com's product taxonomy. Correct categorization ensures products appear in relevant browse pages, search filters, and category-specific promotions. Bol.com's category structure is regularly updated, and some categories have specific attribute requirements that must be met for the listing to be approved. The Partner Platform provides a category lookup tool, and the Retailer API includes endpoints for retrieving the full category tree.

Format: Bol.com category ID from the partner category taxonomy
Example: 37453 (Elektronica > Smartphones > Samsung)
Stock Quantity

Sellers must maintain accurate stock levels at all times. Bol.com takes stock accuracy very seriously as part of their customer experience commitment. Listing products as in-stock when they are unavailable leads to cancellations, which severely damages seller performance metrics. Stock updates should be pushed at least every 30 minutes for active sellers. For sellers using LVB (Logistics via Bol.com), stock levels are managed automatically based on warehouse inventory. Overselling or consistent stock inaccuracies can lead to account penalties or suspension.

Format: Integer value representing available units
Example: 150
Delivery Time

Sellers must specify an accurate delivery promise for each product. Bol.com's algorithm considers delivery speed as a significant factor in Buy Box ranking and search visibility. Faster delivery times (especially 1-2 business days) dramatically improve your chances of winning the Buy Box. Sellers must consistently meet their delivery promises. Bol.com tracks on-time delivery rates, and sellers who fail to meet their promises will see their performance metrics decline, potentially leading to reduced visibility or account restrictions.

Format: Working days range (e.g., 1-2, 2-3, 3-5)
Example: 1-2 werkdagen
Condition

Every offer must specify the product condition. Bol.com supports both new and used/refurbished products across most categories. The condition must accurately reflect the state of the product being sold. For used or refurbished items, sellers should provide additional details about the condition in the offer description. Misrepresenting product condition is a serious policy violation that can result in returns, negative reviews, and account penalties.

Format: New, Refurbished, Good, Reasonable, or Moderate
Example: New
Product Attributes

Bol.com requires category-specific product attributes to be filled in for each listing. These attributes vary by category and can include properties like color, size, material, weight, brand, compatibility, and technical specifications. Completing all relevant attributes is crucial for appearing in filtered search results and comparison features. Bol.com's Content Quality Score heavily penalizes listings with missing mandatory attributes, directly impacting search visibility and sales performance.

Format: Category-specific attributes as defined in the category taxonomy
Example: Color: Zwart, Screen Size: 6.8 inch, Storage: 256GB, RAM: 12GB
Return Handling

Bol.com mandates a minimum 30-day return period for most product categories in accordance with Dutch and Belgian consumer protection laws. Sellers must clearly communicate their return policy and handle returns efficiently. Bol.com tracks return processing time as a performance metric. For LVB sellers, returns are handled by Bol.com's fulfillment centers. Self-fulfilling sellers must process returns within 5 business days of receiving the returned item and issue refunds promptly.

Format: Return period in days and return shipping responsible party
Example: 30 days, free returns for consumers
Optional
1
Shipping Class

The shipping class determines the shipping method and costs associated with the product. Sellers who fulfill orders themselves must select the appropriate shipping class based on the product's dimensions and weight. Bol.com offers differentiated shipping rates for mailbox-compatible packages (brievenbuspakje), standard parcels, and oversized items. Correct shipping class assignment helps manage customer expectations and ensures accurate shipping cost calculations.

Format: Standard, Mailbox package, Parcel, Pallet
Example: Parcel
Feed Specification

How to submit product data to this marketplace

Bol.com supports multiple methods for submitting and managing product data. The most accessible method is manual entry or CSV bulk upload through the Partner Platform. For automated integrations, Bol.com provides the Retailer API (currently v10), which offers comprehensive JSON-based endpoints for product content management, offer management, inventory updates, order processing, and shipment handling. The API follows RESTful conventions with OAuth2 authentication. Bol.com also supports integrations through certified third-party connectors and PIM system plugins. The platform processes feed updates within 30 minutes during regular operations, though peak periods may experience slightly longer processing times.

Category Mapping

Bol.com Category System

System NameBol.com Category Taxonomy
Total Categories4,500+
Category DepthUp to 6 levels

Bol.com's category taxonomy organizes products into a hierarchical structure with over 4,500 leaf categories across major departments including Books, Electronics, Home & Garden, Toys, Fashion, Sports, Baby, Pet Supplies, and more. Each category has a unique identifier and an associated set of mandatory and recommended product attributes. The taxonomy is maintained by Bol.com and updated periodically to reflect market trends and new product types. Sellers must map their products to the most specific (leaf) category to ensure proper display, accurate filtering, and maximum search visibility. Some categories have additional requirements or restrictions, such as safety certifications for children's products or CE marking for electronics.

Mapping Tips

Always select the most specific (deepest) category available. Products mapped to parent-level categories will receive lower visibility in filtered search results
Use Bol.com's category explorer in the Partner Platform to browse the full taxonomy and identify the correct category for each product type
Pay attention to category-specific mandatory attributes. Incomplete attribute data will lower your Content Quality Score and reduce search ranking
Check for category updates regularly, as Bol.com adds new categories and modifies attribute requirements throughout the year
When in doubt, search for similar products on Bol.com and check which category they are listed under to guide your mapping decisions

Strike-through reference prices must reflect genuine previous selling prices held for a reasonable period
Bundle pricing must clearly indicate what is included in the bundle
Price changes are processed within the standard feed update cycle (approximately 30 minutes)

Best Practices

Monitor competitor pricing on Bol.com regularly. Price competitiveness is a major factor in Buy Box algorithms
Use Bol.com's pricing insights available in the Partner Platform to understand market pricing dynamics
Factor in Bol.com's commission rates (typically 5-17% depending on category), payment processing fees, and shipping costs when setting prices
Consider offering bundle deals or volume discounts to increase average order value and differentiate from competitors
Avoid frequent dramatic price fluctuations, which can confuse customers and trigger Bol.com's pricing monitoring systems

Product Attributes & Specifications

Requirements

All mandatory attributes for the product category must be completed
Attribute values must match the predefined options where selection lists are provided
Numeric attributes (weight, dimensions) must use the correct unit of measurement
Boolean attributes must be filled in as true/false or yes/no as specified

Consider using LVB (Logistics via Bol.com) for your best-selling products to achieve same-day or next-day delivery and the 'Verzonden door bol.com' badge
Maintain buffer stock to avoid stockouts that lead to cancellations and damage your performance score
Set up automated stock synchronization between your warehouse management system and Bol.com to prevent overselling
During peak periods (Sinterklaas, Black Friday, Christmas), proactively adjust delivery promises if your fulfillment capacity is constrained
Common Issues

Common Listing Rejections on Bol.com

Avoid these common issues that cause product listings to be rejected or suppressed

Rejection Reason

Invalid or unrecognized EAN barcode

How to Fix

Ensure your EAN is a valid, GS1-registered European Article Number. Purchase legitimate EANs from GS1 Nederland (gs1.nl) or your local GS1 organization. Verify the EAN using GS1's GEPIR database before submitting. Each product variant (size, color, configuration) must have its own unique EAN. Do not reuse EANs across different products or use manufacturer EANs that do not correspond to your specific offering.

Rejection Reason

Incomplete or missing mandatory product attributes

How to Fix

Review the category-specific attribute requirements in the Partner Platform under Product Content. Fill in all mandatory attributes with accurate values that match the expected format and predefined options. Pay special attention to attributes like brand, color, material, dimensions, and weight, which are mandatory across most categories. Use Bol.com's content requirements documentation to understand which attributes are required for your specific product category.

Rejection Reason

Product title does not meet formatting guidelines

How to Fix

Rewrite the title following Bol.com's title formula: Brand + Product Type + Key Feature + Variant. Remove all promotional language (e.g., 'Gratis verzending', 'Nr. 1', 'Aanbieding'), special characters, price information, and stock availability statements. Ensure the title is written in proper Dutch, uses correct capitalization, and stays within the 250-character limit while ideally being under 70 characters for optimal display.

Rejection Reason

Product images do not meet quality standards

How to Fix

Replace images that are too small (below 500x500px), blurry, contain text overlays or watermarks, or show promotional banners. Upload a main image with the product clearly visible on a white or neutral background. Ensure images are in JPEG or PNG format and accurately represent the actual product. Remove any collage-style images or images that include products not included in the listing.

Rejection Reason

Product content conflicts with existing product page

How to Fix

When adding your offer to an existing product page, your product must exactly match the product described on that page (same brand, model, specifications, and EAN). If your product differs from the existing page content, do not add your offer to that page. Instead, verify your EAN is correct and create a new product page with accurate content if no matching page exists. Contact Bol.com Partner Support if you believe the existing product page contains incorrect information.

Rejection Reason

Description contains prohibited content (URLs, contact info, competitor references)

How to Fix

Remove all URLs, email addresses, phone numbers, social media handles, and references to other sales channels or competitors from your product description. Bol.com prohibits any content that directs customers away from the platform. Replace external references with detailed product information that addresses customer questions directly within the listing.

Rejection Reason

Unrealistic or misleading delivery promise

How to Fix

Adjust your delivery time to accurately reflect your actual fulfillment capabilities. If you cannot consistently deliver within 1-2 business days, set a more realistic delivery promise (e.g., 2-3 or 3-5 business days). Bol.com monitors actual delivery performance against promised times and will penalize sellers who consistently underdeliver. Consider enrolling in LVB (Logistics via Bol.com) if you want to offer faster delivery without expanding your own fulfillment infrastructure.

Rejection Reason

Listing in a restricted category without required certifications

How to Fix

Some categories on Bol.com require specific safety certifications, age ratings, or compliance documentation. For children's products, ensure you have CE marking and relevant EN safety standard documentation. For electronics, provide CE declarations of conformity. For food and health products, verify compliance with NVWA regulations. Submit the required documentation through the Partner Platform or contact Partner Support for guidance on category-specific requirements.

Optimization

Bol.com Listing Optimization Tips

Best practices to improve your product listing performance and visibility

1

Maximize your Content Quality Score

Bol.com assigns a Content Quality Score to every product listing, which directly influences search ranking and visibility. To achieve the highest score, complete all mandatory and optional product attributes, write detailed and well-formatted descriptions in Dutch, upload at least 4 high-quality images, ensure your title follows the recommended format, and keep all product data accurate and up to date. Monitor your Content Quality Score in the Partner Platform under Product Content and prioritize improving listings with low scores, as even small improvements can lead to significant visibility gains.

2

Win and maintain the Buy Box

The Buy Box (or 'koopblok') on Bol.com determines which seller's offer is displayed as the default purchase option. Key factors include price competitiveness (including shipping), delivery speed, seller performance score, stock availability, and customer service quality. To maximize your Buy Box win rate, offer competitive pricing, provide fast and reliable delivery (1-2 business days), maintain an excellent seller performance score (above 8 out of 10), and ensure consistent stock availability. Using LVB can significantly boost your Buy Box eligibility due to the fast delivery and 'Verzonden door bol.com' trust badge.

3

Leverage Bol.com Advertising (Sponsored Products)

Bol.com's advertising platform allows sellers to promote products through Sponsored Products ads that appear in search results and on product pages. Use advertising strategically to boost visibility for new listings, seasonal products, or high-margin items. Start with automatic targeting campaigns to discover which search terms drive conversions, then create manual campaigns with refined keyword targeting. Monitor your ACoS (Advertising Cost of Sale) to ensure campaigns remain profitable. Bol.com provides detailed advertising analytics in the Partner Platform to help optimize campaign performance over time.

4

Optimize for Dutch and Belgian search behavior

Bol.com's customer base is primarily Dutch-speaking, so product content must be written in natural, correct Dutch. Research how Dutch consumers search for your products using Bol.com's search suggestions, competitor analysis, and keyword tools. Include relevant Dutch search terms in your title, description, and attributes. Be aware of Belgian Dutch variations (e.g., 'GSM' for mobile phone in Belgium vs. 'mobiel' in the Netherlands). Consider regional preferences and popular brands in both markets to maximize your relevance across the entire Bol.com customer base.

5

Use promotions and seasonal campaigns effectively

Bol.com offers various promotional tools including price promotions, bundle deals, loyalty discounts, and participation in major sales events like Bol Days, Black Friday, and the Sinterklaas season. Plan your promotional calendar well in advance, ensuring you have sufficient stock and competitive pricing for peak periods. Participate in Bol.com's curated deal pages when invited, as these receive significant traffic. Use the Partner Platform's promotion tools to set up time-limited offers that create urgency and drive conversion rates.

6

Maintain excellent seller performance metrics

Bol.com evaluates sellers on several key performance indicators: on-time delivery rate (target: above 93%), cancellation rate (target: below 2%), customer service response time (target: within 24 hours), return handling speed, and customer review scores. These metrics directly impact your visibility, Buy Box eligibility, and overall account standing. Monitor your performance dashboard daily and address any issues promptly. Sellers who consistently exceed performance targets receive preferential treatment in search rankings and may qualify for additional promotional opportunities.

7

Expand product content with rich media

Beyond standard images, invest in creating compelling product content that differentiates your listings. Include multiple angle shots, lifestyle photography showing the product in use, detailed close-ups of quality and craftsmanship, packaging images showing what the customer will receive, and comparison or scale images for products where size matters. For complex or technical products, consider creating product videos that demonstrate functionality. Rich, detailed visual content reduces customer uncertainty, increases conversion rates, and decreases return rates.

8

Utilize Bol.com's analytics for data-driven decisions

The Partner Platform provides detailed analytics including search term performance, product page views, conversion rates, competitor pricing insights, and category trends. Use these data points to identify optimization opportunities: products with high views but low conversion may need better images or pricing, while products with low views may need improved titles or advertising investment. Regularly review the 'Opportunities' section in the Partner Platform, which highlights specific actions you can take to improve sales performance based on Bol.com's data.

Evaluation

Selling on Bol.com: Pros and Cons

Advantages
Dominant market position in the Netherlands and Belgium with over 13 million active customers, providing the largest captive audience in the Benelux region
Logistics via Bol.com (LVB) offers hassle-free fulfillment with same-day and next-day delivery capabilities, plus the trusted 'Verzonden door bol.com' badge
Lower competition compared to global marketplaces like Amazon, giving sellers a better chance of winning visibility in many product categories
Strong brand trust among Dutch and Belgian consumers, with Bol.com consistently ranking as one of the most trusted online retailers in the region
Comprehensive Partner Platform with detailed analytics, advertising tools, and content management capabilities to help sellers grow their business
Transparent and predictable commission structure with clear category-based rates, making it easy to calculate margins and plan pricing strategies
Limitations
Limited geographic reach compared to global marketplaces. Bol.com only serves the Netherlands and Belgium, restricting international expansion from this single channel
Commission rates of 5-17% per category plus fixed transaction fees can reduce margins, particularly for low-priced items where the fixed fee represents a larger percentage
Strict performance requirements with penalties for missed delivery promises, high cancellation rates, or slow customer service response times can be challenging for smaller sellers
Product content must be in Dutch, requiring translation and localization efforts for international sellers entering the Benelux market for the first time
Limited control over product pages. Since multiple sellers share the same product page, your carefully crafted content may be replaced by another seller's content if Bol.com's algorithm determines it to be of higher quality

How to List Products on Bol.com

Step-by-step guide to getting your products live on this marketplace

1

Register for a Bol.com Partner account

Visit partnerplatform.bol.com and register as a selling partner. You will need your business registration number (KvK for Netherlands, KBO for Belgium), VAT number, European bank account details, and a valid email address. Complete the identity verification process and wait for account approval, which typically takes 1-3 business days. Once approved, familiarize yourself with the Partner Platform dashboard, set up your company profile, configure your shipping settings, and review Bol.com's seller guidelines and commission structure for your product categories.

2

Prepare your product data and EAN barcodes

Before creating listings, ensure you have valid GS1-registered EAN barcodes for every product and variant you plan to sell. Prepare your product data including Dutch-language titles following the Brand + Product Type + Key Feature + Variant formula, detailed Dutch descriptions with HTML formatting, high-resolution product images (minimum 1500x1500px recommended), complete attribute data for your product categories, accurate pricing in EUR including VAT, and realistic delivery promises. If integrating via API, set up OAuth2 credentials in the Partner Platform and configure your Retailer API v10 connection.

3

Create product pages and add your offers

Upload your product data through the Partner Platform using manual entry, CSV bulk upload, or the Retailer API. For each product, search first by EAN to check if a product page already exists. If it does, add your offer (price, stock, delivery time, condition) to the existing page. If no page exists, create a new product page with complete content including title, description, images, attributes, and category assignment. Ensure all mandatory attributes for your categories are filled in. Review your listings for Content Quality Score and address any improvement recommendations shown in the Partner Platform.
