What is Data Stewardship Council?

A data stewardship council is a cross-department group, usually with members from e-commerce, marketing, IT and operations, that sets and enforces the rules for a company's data, including product data. It decides who owns which data, which standards apply and how conflicts get resolved. The council does not edit records itself. Day-to-day work belongs to data stewards, who apply the council's rules to their own data domain. The council sets the policy, for example that the product team owns attribute definitions and only marketing edits descriptions, and reviews quality reports to see whether the rules work. Within data governance, the council is the steering body and the data stewards do the execution.
