What is a SKU?
A Stock Keeping Unit (SKU) is an alphanumeric code that uniquely identifies each product in your inventory. Unlike universal identifiers like EAN or UPC barcodes, SKUs are internal codes that you design to encode meaningful product attributes, such as category, brand, color, size, and more. A well-structured SKU system lets your team identify any product at a glance, speeds up warehouse operations, and makes inventory reporting significantly more accurate.

A good SKU is made up of meaningful segments, each representing a product attribute. Here is a typical SKU structure broken down:

Keep it short (8-12 characters)
Shorter SKUs are easier to read, type, and scan. Aim for 2-3 characters per segment.
Use uppercase letters and numbers only
Avoid lowercase letters, special characters, and spaces. Use dashes or underscores as separators.
Start with a category or department prefix
The first segment should tell you what type of product it is at a glance.
Never reuse SKUs
Once a SKU is assigned, never reuse it for a different product, even if the original is discontinued.
Avoid starting with zero
Some systems, especially spreadsheets, strip leading zeros, which can cause confusion.
