Supplier information management (SIM) is the practice and software for collecting, checking and maintaining data about your suppliers, such as company details, certificates, contracts and performance.

What is Supplier Information Management (SIM)?

Supplier information management (SIM) is the practice, and the software, for collecting, checking and maintaining all data about your suppliers as companies: legal name, addresses, contacts, tax and bank details, certificates, contracts, risk ratings and performance. In business, SIM usually stands for exactly this. A SIM system gives procurement, finance and compliance one verified record per supplier. Suppliers often update their own details through a self-service screen, and the system checks documents such as insurance or ISO certificates for expiry dates. SIM is different from managing the product data a supplier sends, sometimes called supplier item data management, which belongs in a PIM. It is also narrower than supplier relationship management (SRM), which covers negotiation, collaboration and strategy. Why Supplier Information Management (SIM) matters for e-commerce

Retailers and distributors work with dozens or hundreds of suppliers. When their details live in emails, spreadsheets and the ERP at the same time, payments go to old bank accounts, expired certificates go unnoticed and nobody knows which supplier is the most reliable. Supplier information management keeps one up-to-date record per supplier, which lowers payment fraud risk, helps prove compliance during audits and makes supplier reviews based on facts. It works best next to a PIM: SIM knows who the supplier is, the PIM knows what the supplier sells.
