Custom Fields Cap at 250 per Product

BigCommerce silently caps custom fields at 250 per product. Catalogs that store spec sheets, ingredient lists, or compliance data on custom fields hit the wall as the catalog grows — and the 251st write fails with an error that doesn't mention the cap.

How WISEPIM handles it

WISEPIM stores typed structured attributes on its side and only renders summary values into BigCommerce custom fields. Detailed spec sheets stay in WISEPIM and are surfaced via storefront API or content blocks instead.

API Rate Limits Differ by Plan

Standard plans get ~450 requests per 30 seconds; Pro and Enterprise get higher. Bulk imports that don't respect the windowing get throttled (429) and partial syncs leave the catalog in a half-updated state.

WISEPIM reads the X-Rate-Limit-Requests-Left and Retry-After headers, paces concurrent calls per plan, and resumes from the last cursor on throttle. Long syncs complete cleanly without manual restarts.

Variant SKUs Inherit From the Parent Until Set

If you don't set a variant SKU explicitly, BigCommerce inherits the parent SKU — which means inventory dashboards and feeds report the same SKU for many variants and your stock figures get muddy.

Categories Use Tree IDs, Not Names

BigCommerce assigns each category a numeric tree ID. Migrating products between categories or merging stores requires resolving names to IDs — a step that's painful in CSVs and silently miss-routes products to root.

Storefront / Channel

A BigCommerce sales destination — a Stencil store, a headless storefront, an Amazon listing, etc. Multi-Storefront extends this to multiple distinct frontends on the same backend.

Each storefront becomes a feed profile in WISEPIM with its own per-channel overrides for name, description, price, and visibility.

V3 Catalog API

BigCommerce's modern REST API for products, variants, modifiers, custom fields, and categories. Replaces the older V2 API for catalog operations.

WISEPIM uses V3 for all catalog reads and writes — better performance, structured variants, and richer error reporting than V2.

Variant

A SKU-bearing combination of options like size and color. A 3-color × 4-size product has 12 variants.

WISEPIM pushes variants through V3 with their option values intact, so configurable products render correctly on the storefront.

Modifier

Per-product customization (engraving, gift wrap, dropdown choices) that doesn't generate a new SKU but can affect price.

Modifiers are kept distinct from variants on the WISEPIM side and pushed to the modifiers endpoint — no SKU duplication.

Custom Field

Untyped name/value pair attached to a product. Used for spec sheets, ingredient lists, and arbitrary metadata.

WISEPIM keeps the structured source of truth and writes flattened summary values to custom fields, avoiding the 250-field cap.

Stencil

BigCommerce's Handlebars-based theming framework for traditional storefronts. Replaces the old Blueprint themes.
