PIM buyer's guide 2026

The best PIM software in 2026, compared honestly

There is no single best PIM software, only the best fit for your catalog, team and budget. This guide compares nine PIM systems by who they suit, how they price and what to watch for, using each vendor's own positioning and published prices. Where a vendor publishes no price, we say so.

Short answer

For small and mid-size teams that want AI to do the content work, WISEPIM and Plytix publish their prices and let you start free. Akeneo and Pimcore suit teams with a partner or developers and offer free self-hosted editions. Salsify, inriver, Pimberly and Stibo Systems serve larger brands and enterprises, mostly on quote. Sales Layer focuses on B2B distributors.

The shortlist at a glance

The table sums up each system in one row. The sections below go into each vendor. Prices were checked against vendor pages in October 2026; the PIM pricing guide explains how PIM pricing models compare.

WISEPIM

AI-native PIM with public pricing and a free plan.

We make WISEPIM, so read this entry with that in mind. It is listed first because it is ours, not because it wins every row in this guide. WISEPIM is a PIM where AI does the content work: it fills attributes, writes titles and descriptions, classifies products into categories and translates into 70+ languages, while quality rules flag what is still missing per channel.

Products come in from Shopify, WooCommerce, Magento 2, Lightspeed, CCV Shop and other stores, from files or from Akeneo, and go out through store connections, file exports and Feed Hub. Prices are public on the pricing page and you can start free.

  • Best for: Webshops, brands and wholesalers with up to tens of thousands of products who want AI to fill attributes, write descriptions and translate
  • Pricing: Free up to 100 products; paid plans from €299 to €1,499 a month billed yearly, priced by product count
  • Hosting: SaaS
  • Keep in mind: A younger product than most on this list. No GDSN data pool connection, no supplier portal and no Amazon connector.

Akeneo

Widely used open-core PIM with a mature data model.

Akeneo is one of the best-known names in PIM. Its strength is a flexible data model with families, attributes and variants, a large partner network and a marketplace of connectors. The open source Community Edition lets technical teams start without a license fee.

Rollouts usually run through a certified partner. Read Akeneo pricing for the packages, or WISEPIM vs Akeneo for a side by side. WISEPIM also connects to Akeneo, so you can add AI content work on top of an existing Akeneo setup.

  • Best for: Brands and retailers with an implementation partner and a content team, from the free Community Edition up to enterprise
  • Pricing: Community Edition free and self-hosted; SaaS packages Growth, Advanced and Premium, with Advanced and Premium on request
  • Hosting: SaaS or self-hosted (CE)
  • Keep in mind: Budget for partner fees and your own team's time on top of the license.

Plytix

Lean PIM for small teams, with a built-in DAM and public prices.

Plytix is one of the few PIM vendors with a published price list, and its interface is easy to learn. Product data, images and documents live in one place, and brand portals let you share them with retailers.

The price follows your SKU count and the add-ons you choose. See Plytix pricing for the published numbers and WISEPIM vs Plytix for how the two differ.

  • Best for: Small teams that want a tidy place to organize and share product data and assets
  • Pricing: Public price list by SKU tier up to 25,000 SKUs; Standard is free at 100 SKUs; AI, feeds, brand portals and connectors are add-ons
  • Hosting: SaaS
  • Keep in mind: Add-ons scale with your SKU tier, so price the add-ons you need, not only the plan.

Salsify

Enterprise product experience platform built around retailer syndication.

Salsify combines PIM, digital asset management and syndication to retailers in one platform. Its network of retailer connections and its digital shelf tools are why large brands choose it.

Prices come after a demo. Salsify pricing collects what is public, and WISEPIM vs Salsify compares the two.

  • Best for: Consumer brands that ship product content to many large retailers and data pools
  • Pricing: On request; Vendr reports a median contract of $52,100 a year
  • Hosting: SaaS
  • Keep in mind: Built for enterprise brands; implementation and services are priced separately.

Pimcore

Open data platform for PIM, MDM, DAM and digital experience.

Pimcore is a framework as much as a product. You model products, assets, customers and content in one system and build exactly the workflows you need, which makes it popular for complex catalogs.

That freedom means development work: plan for a partner or developers. Pimcore pricing explains the editions and the license change, and WISEPIM vs Pimcore compares the two approaches.

  • Best for: Companies with an in-house or partner PHP team that want one platform they can shape completely
  • Pricing: Community Edition free below €5M revenue; Professional $9,900 and Enterprise $29,900 a year, with no per-product or per-user fees
  • Hosting: Self-hosted or PaaS
  • Keep in mind: The license is the small part of the cost; hosting, upgrades and development are the larger part.

inriver

Brand-side PIM with digital shelf analytics built in.

inriver focuses on manufacturers and brands. Besides product data management it offers digital shelf analytics, so you can see how your products appear on retailer sites.

Implementations run through certified partners. inriver pricing covers the plans and what inriver itself says about implementation costs.

  • Best for: Manufacturers and brands that sell B2B and through retail and want PIM and shelf analytics from one vendor
  • Pricing: On request: four plans (Foundation, Core, Professional, Enterprise), none with a published price
  • Hosting: SaaS
  • Keep in mind: Every plan is quoted, so ask for the full first-year cost including the partner.

Pimberly

SaaS PIM for larger catalogs, with published yearly plans.

Pimberly publishes yearly prices for most of its plans, which is rare at this end of the market. Each plan raises the limits on SKUs, users and storage, and Pimberly's in-house team handles implementation.

See Pimberly pricing for the plans, limits and add-ons.

  • Best for: Mid-size and larger retailers, brands and manufacturers that want the vendor's own team to implement
  • Pricing: From $36,000 a year (also €36,000 or £30,000) for 50,000 SKUs and 20 users; add-ons extra
  • Hosting: SaaS
  • Keep in mind: The entry price assumes a sizeable catalog; smaller teams pay for capacity they may not use yet.

Sales Layer

SaaS PIM aimed at B2B distributors and manufacturers.

Sales Layer is a Spanish SaaS PIM with a friendly interface and a strong presence among B2B distributors and manufacturers, especially in Southern Europe. It connects to ecommerce platforms, marketplaces and ERP systems through its own connectors.

  • Best for: B2B distributors and manufacturers who want a manageable SaaS PIM without an enterprise program
  • Pricing: On request; we could not verify current public prices
  • Hosting: SaaS
  • Keep in mind: Ask for a quote that lists connectors and users, since we found no public price list.

Stibo Systems

Enterprise multidomain master data management (STEP).

Stibo Systems is the heavyweight on this list. Its platform covers product information as one domain of a wider master data program, which suits global companies with many systems and strict governance.

WISEPIM vs Stibo Systems shows where a lighter PIM fits instead, or next to it.

  • Best for: Global enterprises that master product, customer, supplier and location data in one program
  • Pricing: On request; no prices published
  • Hosting: SaaS or private cloud
  • Keep in mind: Plan a multi-month program with a systems integrator, not a quick rollout.

How to choose a PIM system

Feature lists look alike from a distance. These criteria separate the systems in practice. Write your answers down before the first demo, and turn them into a requirements list with the PIM requirements checklist.

  • Catalog size now and in three years: SKU-based pricing can jump as you grow
  • Data model: variants, product families and the attributes your categories need
  • Channels: native connectors for your webshop, marketplaces and feeds, and what each connector really syncs
  • Content work: who writes descriptions and translations today, and whether the PIM can do part of it
  • Total cost: license, implementation, connectors, hosting and your team's time over three years
  • Time to value: weeks with a SaaS PIM and standard connectors, months with a partner-led program
  • Hosting and exit: SaaS or self-hosted, and how you get all your data out if you leave
  • A trial on your own data: import a few hundred real products before you sign anything

How we built this list

We picked PIM systems that merchants in Europe and North America shortlist most often, and described each one by its own positioning and public documentation. Prices come from vendor pricing pages and, for Salsify, from Vendr's public purchase data. We do not rank vendors with a score, because the right choice depends on your catalog and team more than on any single feature.

Frequently asked questions

It depends on your catalog, team and budget. WISEPIM and Plytix suit small and mid-size teams and publish their prices. Akeneo and Pimcore suit teams with a partner or developers. Salsify, inriver, Pimberly and Stibo Systems serve larger brands and enterprises.

Yes. WISEPIM has a free plan for up to 100 products and Plytix Standard is free at 100 SKUs. Akeneo Community Edition and Pimcore Community Edition have no license fee, but you pay for hosting, upgrades and development yourself.

Of the nine systems in this guide, WISEPIM, Plytix, Pimcore and Pimberly publish prices. Akeneo publishes part of its packaging. Salsify, inriver, Sales Layer and Stibo Systems quote on request.

Look for a SaaS PIM with public pricing, a free plan or trial, and ready-made connectors for your webshop. WISEPIM and Plytix both fit that description. Self-hosted open source options cost no license fee but need technical skills to run.

From days to weeks for a SaaS PIM with standard connectors and clean source data, to several months for a partner-led enterprise program. Pimberly, for example, says a typical client takes 12 weeks. Data cleaning is usually the longest part, whichever system you choose.

Yes, in some setups. WISEPIM connects to Akeneo, so teams keep Akeneo as their system of record and use WISEPIM to enrich, translate and check the data. For other PIMs, an import and export through files is the usual route.
