Odoo PIM: managing product information around Odoo
Odoo combines sales, inventory, purchasing, a website and an eCommerce app in one system, so it already holds a lot of product data. The question behind "Odoo PIM" is whether that is enough once you sell in more channels and languages, or whether you need a separate PIM next to it. This guide covers what Odoo offers for product information, where it stops, how a PIM connects to Odoo, and how WISEPIM fits, honestly, without a native connector.

Short answer
Odoo manages product templates, variants built from attributes, eCommerce descriptions and media, and translations of product fields, with CSV and Excel import and an external API. For one Odoo webshop that is often enough. When you also sell on marketplaces and other webshops with their own required fields, need consistent enrichment at scale or want quality rules per channel, teams add a PIM and connect it through CSV or XLSX files or Odoo's API. WISEPIM has no native Odoo connector and works through file import and export and the WISEPIM API.

What Odoo does with product data
In Odoo a product starts as a product template. Variants are specific versions of that template, for example a T-shirt in blue, size S, each with its own stock and sales records. Variants are built from attributes such as color and size, and the attributes and their values must exist before variants can be created.
Each attribute has a variant creation mode. Instantly creates every combination as soon as you add attributes to the template. Dynamically creates a variant only when it is added to a sales order. Never prevents automatic creation, which you use for attributes that describe rather than split a product. On quotations, Odoo uses the product configurator by default to pick the right variant.
For the webshop, the eCommerce app adds a rich-text description below the product name and an Ecommerce Media section for extra images and videos. Translatable product fields show a language code next to them, and Odoo's own documentation notes that untranslated content can hurt user experience and SEO.
Where Odoo runs out of room
Odoo's product model is built around selling, stocking and invoicing inside Odoo and publishing to the Odoo website. That is a strength when Odoo is your only channel. It becomes a limit when the same products also go to Amazon, bol, Google Shopping or a second webshop, each with its own attribute list, category tree and character limits. The product form does not track which fields each external channel requires or which products are ready for it.
Enrichment at scale is the second limit. Writing and checking descriptions, specs and translations for thousands of products is a workflow problem: who writes, who reviews, which rules must pass before publishing. Odoo gives you the fields; it does not give you a content pipeline with quality gates per channel.
Third, bulk data work in Odoo runs largely through import and export. The import tool is solid, with a Test button before you commit, but Odoo's documentation also notes that an import cannot be undone, so careful mapping and testing matter.
| Need | In Odoo | What a PIM adds |
|---|---|---|
| Variants | Templates and variants from attributes | The same, plus families with required fields per product type |
| Webshop content | eCommerce description and media for the Odoo website | Content and templates per channel, including marketplaces |
| Translations | Translatable fields per language | AI translation with terminology and review per language |
| Bulk changes | Import and export of CSV or XLSX | Bulk edits with preview and a change history |
| Channel readiness | Not tracked per external channel | Required-field coverage and blocking rules per channel |
| Orders, stock, invoices | Yes, the source of truth | Read from Odoo, not edited in the PIM |
What about Odoo PIM apps?
The Odoo Apps Store has a PIM category. When we checked it in October 2026 it listed a single free community module. Add-on modules extend Odoo's own data model, which keeps everything in one database but also ties your content process to Odoo's release cycle and your partner's upgrade work.
A separate PIM is the other route: content lives outside the ERP and is sent to Odoo and every other channel. Which is better depends on how many channels you serve beyond Odoo. If Odoo is the only storefront, extending Odoo can be enough. If it is one of several, a PIM avoids building channel logic inside the ERP.
Ways to connect a PIM to Odoo
Agree on field ownership first. Usually Odoo owns internal references, barcodes, prices, costs and stock, and the PIM owns titles, descriptions, specifications, media and translations. Our PIM vs ERP guide explains why. Then choose a pattern.
If you plan an API integration, note the timing: Odoo 19 introduced the External JSON-2 API, which uses API keys as bearer tokens with a maximum lifetime of three months. The older XML-RPC and JSON-RPC endpoints are deprecated and scheduled for removal in Odoo 22, planned for fall 2028. Build new integrations on JSON-2.
| Pattern | How it works | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| CSV or XLSX files | Export products from Odoo (use the import-compatible export), import them into the PIM, and import enriched data back into Odoo | A start, periodic updates, small teams | Keep the External ID column, import attributes and categories first, and test before you import |
| External API | Read and write product templates and variants through the JSON-2 API | Scheduled or event-driven sync | Needs a developer or Odoo partner; API keys expire after at most three months |
| Integration platform | An iPaaS or partner-built connector moves data between the PIM API and Odoo | Several systems, monitoring, retries | Extra cost and someone to maintain the flows |
How WISEPIM fits with Odoo
WISEPIM does not have a native Odoo connector, and we would rather say so here than in a sales call. It works with Odoo through two documented routes.
Files: export products from Odoo as CSV or XLSX and import them into WISEPIM. AI proposes the column mapping, you save it per source, and the internal reference or barcode works as the match key so re-imports update existing products. When the content is ready, export products with a template that matches the columns of your Odoo import, including the External ID, and run Odoo's Test step before importing.
API: the WISEPIM API reads, creates and updates products and categories, and webhooks fire when a product is created, updated, enriched or translated. A developer or Odoo partner can connect it to Odoo's JSON-2 API, directly or through an integration platform.
If you also sell through a webshop that WISEPIM connects to directly, such as Shopify, WooCommerce or Magento 2, content can go there straight from WISEPIM while Odoo keeps orders and stock. The full list is on the PIM connections page.
- Agree which fields Odoo owns and which WISEPIM owns
- Export one product category from Odoo with the import-compatible export and import it into WISEPIM
- Set up a product family and a few Quality Guard rules for your main channel
- Enrich and translate the category, review it, and export a file in your Odoo import layout
- Run Odoo's Test step, import, and decide whether files are enough or the API route is worth building
