What open source PIM means
An open source PIM is product information management software whose source code you can download, run on your own servers and change. You get the same core job as any PIM system: one place for product attributes, categories, translations and images, and exports to your webshop, marketplaces and feeds. The difference is who runs it. With open source, your team or an agency installs, hosts, secures and upgrades the software.
The license matters more than the label. OSL-3.0, GPLv3, MIT and Apache-2.0 are all open source licenses with different rules for changes and distribution. Pimcore's current license, the Pimcore Open Core License (POCL), is a different case: the license text itself says the code is not licensed out as open source software, and free production use depends on your company's revenue.
The options
Open source PIM options in 2026
| Project | License | Stack | Latest release | Paid options |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Akeneo PIM Community Edition | OSL-3.0 | PHP, Symfony, MySQL, Elasticsearch | v2026.4, August 2026 | Akeneo Product Cloud (SaaS), quote based |
| Pimcore | POCL (source-available since 2025.1) | PHP, Symfony, MySQL or MariaDB, OpenSearch | 2026.3.1, October 2026 | Professional $9,900 and Enterprise $29,900 a year |
| AtroPIM | GPLv3 | PHP, PostgreSQL or MySQL | 1.16.10, September 2026 | SaaS from €400 a month, paid modules |
| UnoPim | MIT | PHP, Laravel, MySQL or PostgreSQL | v3.1.3, September 2026 | Hosting from $50 a month, paid connectors |
| OpenPIM | Apache-2.0 | TypeScript, Node.js, Vue, PostgreSQL | No tagged releases; last server commit February 2025 | None listed |
Akeneo PIM Community Edition is the best known open source PIM. It is licensed under OSL-3.0, Akeneo still ships calendar-versioned releases (v2026.4 arrived on 28 August 2026), and Akeneo's help center says the Community Edition continues to be supported. Hosted services, support and the newer features sit in Akeneo's paid SaaS packages; see our Akeneo pricing guide for how those are quoted.
Pimcore moved its Community Edition from GPLv3 to the Pimcore Open Core License with version 2025.1; 2024.4 was the last GPLv3 release. Under the POCL, production use is free for organisations with total global revenue up to €5 million (not when the group they belong to is larger), for non-profit and educational organisations, and for non-production use such as demos. Above that, you need a commercial license. Our Pimcore pricing guide lists the published prices.
AtroPIM is the PIM module on the AtroCore platform, licensed GPLv3 and actively released. Its README asks for at least 2 vCPU, 4 GB RAM and 80 GB SSD and rules out shared hosting. UnoPim, built by Webkul on Laravel, is MIT licensed and combines PIM with basic asset management. OpenPIM is Apache-2.0 licensed and runs in Docker, but its server repository shows no releases and no commits since February 2025, so treat it as lightly maintained.
Total cost
What open source PIM really costs
The license line on an open source PIM is often €0. The bill moves to four other places, and the vendors' own price lists give a good sense of the size of each one.
- Hosting. Akeneo CE needs Linux, Apache, PHP 8.1, MySQL 8 and Elasticsearch 8 according to its system requirements. AtroCore sells managed hosting for AtroPIM from €160 to €310 a month, and Webkul offers UnoPim hosting from $50 a month.
- Support. Community editions come without a support contract. AtroCore's support plans run from €240 to €720 a month; Pimcore's 24/7 support and long-term support releases are part of the $29,900 a year Enterprise Edition.
- Paid modules and connectors. AtroPIM sells workflows, versioning, data quality and SSO as modules from €30 to €60 a month each (or a one-off license plus a yearly update fee). Its ERP integrations start at €1,900 and e-commerce integrations at €3,900. UnoPim's Shopify Connector Pro costs $399.
- Upgrades and developer time. Akeneo's README states there is no guaranteed backwards compatibility between versions, so every upgrade is a small project. Someone on your team needs PHP and Symfony (or Laravel, or Node.js) skills, plus time for security patches and backups.
We did not find an independent, reputable study of self-hosting costs for PIM, so we will not quote one. The vendor price lists above are the most honest benchmark available: if a managed version of an open source PIM costs €400 a month, running it yourself is rarely much cheaper once you count your own hours.
Ecosystem
Extensions and connectors
A PIM is only as useful as the channels it feeds. Akeneo has the largest ecosystem: its App Store lists 138 apps, with a filter for apps that work with the Community Edition. Pimcore reserves several modules, including the Workflow Designer, Data Quality Management and the E-Commerce Framework, for its paid editions. AtroPIM and UnoPim sell their webshop and ERP connectors separately. Check the connector for your own stack (Shopify, WooCommerce, Magento, Lightspeed, an ERP) before you pick a project, because building one yourself is where open source budgets usually overrun.
Fit
When open source PIM fits
- You have PHP or Node.js developers in house who can own hosting, upgrades and security.
- Your data model is unusual enough that you will customise the code, not just configure it.
- Data must stay on your own infrastructure for legal or contractual reasons.
- You want to avoid vendor lock-in and accept that you become your own vendor.
Fit
When a SaaS PIM fits better
- Your ecommerce team has no developer time to spare for servers and upgrades.
- You need to be live in days, not after an implementation project.
- You want predictable monthly costs instead of hosting, support and module invoices from different parties.
- The real bottleneck is writing, translating and checking product content, not storing it.

WISEPIM
Where WISEPIM fits
WISEPIM is a SaaS PIM with AI built in: it enriches product data, writes descriptions, translates into 93 languages and checks quality before you publish. There is nothing to install or patch. The free plan covers 100 products with 50 AI credits a month, with no credit card and no time limit. Paid plans start at €299 a month billed yearly for 1,000 products, and AI work costs a few cents per product depending on your plan. See WISEPIM pricing for the calculator.
You do not have to choose between your open source PIM and WISEPIM. If you already run Akeneo CE or Pimcore, WISEPIM can work as an AI layer next to your existing PIM: it reads products over the API or a CSV export, enriches and translates them, and writes the values back to the same SKUs. Your PIM stays the source of truth.
| WISEPIM plan | Products | AI credits per month | Per month, billed yearly | Per month, billed monthly |

| Starter | Up to 1,000 | 4,000 | €299 | €399 |
| Starter Plus | Up to 2,500 | 10,000 | €399 | €529 |
| Growth | Up to 5,000 | 20,000 | €499 | €649 |
| Growth Plus | Up to 7,500 | 30,000 | €599 | €779 |

| Business Plus | Up to 15,000 | 55,000 | €849 | €1,099 |
| Scale | Up to 20,000 | 70,000 | €999 | €1,299 |
| Scale Plus | Up to 30,000 | 100,000 | €1,149 | €1,499 |
| Pro | Up to 40,000 | 120,000 | €1,299 | €1,699 |
| Pro Plus | Up to 50,000 | 150,000 | €1,499 | €1,949 |
Every plan includes 3 content languages; extra languages are a monthly add-on. Above 50,000 products WISEPIM quotes an Enterprise plan.
