ChatGPT prompt for product titles, with examples

A good product title names the brand, the product type and the attributes shoppers filter on, and keeps the important words at the front. This prompt returns five title variants within your character limit, with the count next to each, so you can pick one without counting by hand.

The prompt

Write 5 product title variants for {product_name}.

Facts: {specifications}
Brand: {brand}
Channel: {channel}
Maximum length: {max_characters} characters, spaces included

Title formula: Brand + product type + the 2 or 3 attributes a shopper filters on (size, material, color, capacity, compatibility) + quantity when it is a multipack.

Rules:
- Put the words a shopper searches for in the first 40 characters, so the title still makes sense when it is cut off.
- Use each word at most twice. No promotional words such as "best", "sale", "free shipping" or "new".
- No special characters such as ! $ ? _ { } ^ unless they are part of the brand name.
- Capitalize the first letter of each major word; write units as numbers (500 ml, 2 m).
- Every attribute must come from the facts.

Return the 5 titles as a numbered list, each followed by its character count in parentheses. Make variant 1 the most search-focused and variant 5 the shortest.

Tips for better results

  • Check the character counts the model reports. Models miscount now and then, so paste your favorite into a counter or a title checker before you publish.
  • Keep the brand spelled exactly as in your brand registry, including capitals.
  • Use a separate run per channel: a title that fits Google Shopping's 150 characters will be cut on Amazon.
  • Move details that do not fit into bullets or the description instead of squeezing them into the title.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a product title be?

As long as the channel allows and no longer than needed. Amazon allows 75 characters in most categories, Google Shopping 150, and most store themes show about 60 to 70 characters before wrapping.

Should the brand come first in a product title?

On marketplaces, usually yes, because shoppers and the marketplace both expect it. In your own store you can lead with the product type if your brand is less known than the product.

Can I generate titles for a whole catalog?

Yes. In WISEPIM you test the title prompt in the Prompt Lab, save it, and run it on a selection of products, with the attributes filled from each product's data.
