VAT Calculator for EU Countries
Add VAT to a net price, take it out of a gross price, find the VAT in any amount or work back from a VAT amount. Every EU country's rates are built in, and every result is exact to the cent.
Net price to gross price: enter a price without VAT to see the VAT and the price with VAT.
Gross amount
€123.00
€100.00 + 23% VAT (€23.00) = €123.00
- Net amount
- €100.00
- VAT
- €23.00
Rounded to the cent, a half cent up. Net amount + VAT always equals the gross amount.
How to calculate VAT
VAT is a percentage of the net price, the price before tax. Adding it is a multiplication. Taking it out of a gross price is a division, because the VAT is a share of the net price and not of the gross price.
Add VAT
gross = net x (1 + rate / 100)
€100 at 21%: €100 x 1.21 = €121.00
Remove VAT
net = gross / (1 + rate / 100)
€121 at 21%: €121 / 1.21 = €100.00
VAT in a gross amount
VAT = gross x rate / (100 + rate)
€60 at 20%: €60 x 20 / 120 = €10.00
Price from the VAT
net = VAT / (rate / 100)
€19 at 19%: €19 / 0.19 = €100.00
The most common mistake is to subtract the rate from a gross price. 21% of €121 is €25.41, but the VAT in €121 at 21% is €21. Divide by 1 plus the rate instead, or use the Remove VAT mode.
Standard, reduced and super-reduced rates
- The standard rate applies to most goods and services. EU law sets a minimum of 15%; today the rates run from 17% in Luxembourg to 27% in Hungary.
- Reduced rates, at least 5%, cover goods and services on the EU's list, such as most food, books and medicines. Each country chooses which of them get a reduced rate.
- Some countries also have a super-reduced rate below 5% or a parking rate of at least 12%. Check the rate for your product with the tax authority of the country.
- A 0% rate with the right to deduct, such as for exports, is not a reduced rate. Some countries list it next to their reduced rates.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate VAT?
Multiply the net price by the VAT rate. At 21%, the VAT on €100 is €21 and the gross price is €121. To add VAT in one step, multiply the net price by 1 plus the rate: €100 x 1.21 = €121.
How do I remove VAT from a price?
Divide the gross price by 1 plus the rate. €121 / 1.21 = €100 net, so the VAT is €21. Do not subtract 21% of the gross price: 21% of €121 is €25.41, which takes off too much.
How do I work out the VAT included in a price?
VAT = gross price x rate / (100 + rate). At 20%, a €60 price includes €60 x 20 / 120 = €10 VAT. Use the VAT amount mode with the switch on to see it for any amount.
How do I get the price from a VAT amount?
Divide the VAT by the rate. €19 of VAT at 19% means a net price of €19 / 0.19 = €100 and a gross price of €119. The reverse mode does this, which helps when a receipt only shows the VAT.
Which VAT rate applies when I sell to other EU countries?
Once your sales to consumers in other EU countries pass €10,000 a year in total, you charge the VAT rate of the buyer's country and can declare it through the One Stop Shop (OSS). The table on this page lists the rates of every EU country.
What are the UK VAT rates?
The UK has a standard rate of 20% for most goods and services, a reduced rate of 5% for some, such as home energy, and a zero rate of 0% for items such as most food and children's clothes. Pick United Kingdom in the calculator to work in pounds.
How does the calculator round?
To the cent, with a half cent rounded up (away from zero). It rounds the amount it works out once and derives the other one from it, so net price + VAT always equals the gross price exactly.
