Merchant Center issue

Fix an invalid product category in Merchant Center

The google_product_category attribute only accepts values from Google's own product taxonomy. Anything else, such as a shortened path or your shop's own category name, triggers "Invalid product category". The attribute is optional, so you can also leave it out. This page explains which values Google accepts and how to fix them in bulk.

Short answer

Replace the value with a category from Google's product taxonomy: either the numeric ID, such as 1580, or the full path, such as Apparel & Accessories > Clothing > Suits > Tuxedos. Google recommends the ID. Put your own category names in product_type instead. Or remove google_product_category and let Google pick a category itself.

What this issue means

Google keeps a fixed list of product categories, the Google product taxonomy. When the google_product_category value you send doesn't match any entry on that list, Merchant Center raises this issue. Google accepts two forms: the numeric category ID or the full path, with every level separated by a greater-than sign.

The attribute is optional. If you leave it out, Google uses its own signals to choose a category. If you include it, it must be a predefined value. Choosing the category yourself can still matter: when Google infers the wrong category, the attributes it requires can differ, for example the apparel attributes. New to the taxonomy? Read the Google product category guide.

Common causes

  • The value is not a valid category ID or full category path.
  • Only the last level was sent, such as "Tuxedos" instead of the full path. Google does not accept that.
  • Your shop's own category names were mapped to google_product_category instead of product_type.
  • A typo, a translated level name or a different separator breaks the match with the taxonomy.

How to fix it, step by step

  1. In Merchant Center, open Products and the Needs attention tab, and filter on this issue to see every affected product.
  2. Look up the right category for each product, for example with the Product Category Finder or the taxonomy download.
  3. For a handful of products: open the product, choose Edit product, enter the numeric category ID and save.
  4. For many products: download the affected products as a CSV file and match it against your product data by ID.
  5. Fill google_product_category with the category ID, which Google recommends, or the full path. Move your own category names to product_type.
  6. If you can't find a fitting category, remove the value and let Google choose one.
  7. Upload the corrected data the way you normally do and check Needs attention again. Changes can take 24 to 72 hours to show.

How to prevent it

  • Send category IDs rather than paths: they don't break on typos or translations.
  • Keep google_product_category and product_type apart in your feed mapping.
  • Map categories once, at category level, instead of per product.
  • Check the mapping when you add a new category to your shop.

How WISEPIM helps

In WISEPIM, the Category map links each of your categories to a Google taxonomy category. It tries an exact match, rules and a name match first, then lets AI choose from real taxonomy candidates. Once you confirm a mapping, the Merchant Center connection and Feed Hub use it. The connection only sends google_product_category for mapped categories and sends your own category path as product_type, so the two never get mixed up.

Without an account, the free Product Category Finder suggests real taxonomy IDs for up to 5 product titles, and the taxonomy download gives you the full list (version 2021-09-21) as CSV or JSON.

Frequently asked questions

No, it is optional. If you leave it out, Google picks a category based on its own signals. If you include it, the value must come from Google's product taxonomy.

Both are accepted, but Google recommends the numeric ID. It is shorter and doesn't break on spelling or language differences. Sending only the last level of the path is not accepted.

product_type is your own category structure and can contain any value. google_product_category must be a value from Google's taxonomy. Send your shop categories in product_type.
