How the HS code finder works

HS codes classify goods for customs. The first six digits are the Harmonized System, shared by almost every country. The EU adds two digits in its Combined Nomenclature (CN), and the US adds four in its Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS). Customs declarations, duty rates and many marketplace listings for cross-border shipping depend on the right code.

The finder searches the official nomenclature for the headings that fit your product, reads the chapter and heading notes that decide between them, and then picks one code from that list. It can only answer with a code that exists in the edition it searched, and it always shows that edition's own wording.

Every answer has a confidence level. When the finder isn't sure, it shows the closest candidates side by side so you can compare their official descriptions. Material and use matter most, so add them when a result comes back with low confidence.

A suggested code is not a binding classification. Check it with your customs broker or customs authority before you declare goods, or apply for a binding ruling (an EU BTI or a US CBP ruling) when the classification really matters.

One product is quick. A whole catalog needs a task.

WISEPIM stores an HS code on every product. Its HS code task picks a code from the same official nomenclature for each product in your catalog, at 1 credit per product, and you can review the suggestions before they're applied.

Frequently asked questions

What is an HS code?

An HS code is the number customs uses to classify a product. The first 6 digits come from the Harmonized System, which almost every country uses. The EU extends it to 8 digits in the Combined Nomenclature (CN), and the US to 10 digits in the Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS).

How do I find the HS code for my product?

Describe the product above, with its material and what it's used for, and pick the EU or the US. The finder searches the official nomenclature and returns a code with its official description. You can also browse the chapters and headings yourself on the HS code pages.

Can the finder make up a code?

No. It first searches the official nomenclature for candidate codes and then chooses among them, so every answer exists in the EU CN 2026 or the US HTS 2026 and is shown with that edition's own wording.

What does the confidence level mean?

High means the product fits one heading clearly. Medium means a close alternative exists. Low means the finder isn't sure: it then shows the candidates side by side, and you should check the code with your customs broker before you use it.

Is the suggested code binding?

No. It's a suggestion, not a binding classification. Check it with your customs broker or customs authority, or apply for a binding ruling: a Binding Tariff Information (BTI) decision in the EU or a CBP ruling in the US.

Is it free, and how many products can I look up?

It's free and needs no account, for 5 lookups a day. To fill HS codes for a whole catalog, WISEPIM runs the same lookup as a task on every product, at 1 credit per product.
