Country of Origin

Product and catalog managementBasic Level

Country of origin is the country where a product was manufactured or last substantially transformed, stored as a product attribute for customs, labels and sales channels.

What is Country of Origin?

Country of origin is the country where a product was manufactured, or, when parts come from several countries, where it last underwent a substantial transformation. It is the 'Made in' of a product, stored as a product attribute, usually as a two-letter ISO country code such as CN or DE. Customs authorities use the country of origin together with the HS code to apply duties, trade measures and preferential rates. Some product groups need it on the label, and many marketplaces and shop platforms ask for it in the listing or for cross-border shipping. It is not the same as the ship-from country or the brand's home country: a German brand can make its products in Portugal. The HS code guide explains how origin and tariff codes work together. This page is not legal or customs advice.

Why Country of Origin matters for e-commerce

A wrong or missing country of origin slows parcels at customs, leads to the wrong import duties and can block listings on marketplaces that require the field. For cross-border sellers it is one of the fields that has to be right on every product before the first international order. Shoppers look at it too. Some prefer products made locally or in a specific country, and for some products, such as certain foods, the origin must be shown. Keeping origin as a structured attribute, not a sentence in the description, lets each channel and shipping document use it.
