From EAN to GTIN-14
A carton of identical products gets its own number, a GTIN-14. You build it from the EAN of the product inside: put an indicator digit in front, drop the old check digit and calculate a new one. Each pack level, such as a box of 6 and a box of 24, gets its own indicator digit.
| Step | Example |
|---|---|
| EAN-13 of the product inside | 9501101530003 |
| Drop the check digit | 950110153000 |
| Add indicator digit 1 in front | 1950110153000 |
| Calculate the new check digit | 19501101530000 |
- Indicator digits 1 to 8 are for pack levels of the same product. 9 is reserved for variable-measure items, such as cheese sold by weight.
- Indicator 0 means the GTIN-14 is just the product's own GTIN padded with a zero.
- A mixed carton with different products is a new trade item and needs its own GTIN, not an indicator digit.
ITF-14 size and print specs
ITF-14 is printed straight onto cardboard, often with flexo plates that spread ink. Its wide bars and the bearer frame keep it readable when the print is rough.
| Spec | GS1 rule | This generator |
|---|---|---|
| Narrow bar (X-dimension) | 0.495 mm to 1.016 mm | 1.016 mm at 100% |
| Wide-to-narrow ratio | 2.25:1 to 3:1 | 2.5:1 |
| Bar height | At least 32 mm | 32 mm at 100% |
| Quiet zones | At least 10 narrow bars on each side | 10 narrow bars |
| Bearer bars | A frame, or at least top and bottom bars, 4.8 mm thick | Full frame, 4.83 mm |
| Size at 100% | About 152 mm wide including frame |
When to use ITF-14 or GS1-128
ITF-14 holds only the GTIN-14. When the carton also needs a batch number, a best-before date or an SSCC for the shipment, use GS1-128 instead: switch the format above and enter the data with Application Identifiers, for example (01)19501101530000(10)AB12(17)270101.
Never print the ITF-14 or the carton's GTIN-14 on the consumer product. Tills scan the EAN-13 on the product, and a carton code at the checkout would sell the whole box.
One barcode is easy. A catalog of GTINs needs checking.
WISEPIM's Quality Guard checks the GTIN on every product, blocks wrong check digits and flags missing and duplicate codes before Amazon, bol.com or Google reject them.

Frequently asked questions
How do I make a GTIN-14 from an EAN?
Put an indicator digit from 1 to 8 in front of the EAN, drop its check digit and calculate a new one. Enter the first 13 digits here and the generator adds the check digit for you.
Do I need bearer bars on an ITF-14?
Yes, on corrugated cartons. Bearer bars stop a scanner from reading half the symbol as a shorter code and even out plate pressure in printing. GS1 accepts a full frame or top and bottom bars.
What size is an ITF-14 barcode?
At 100% the narrow bar is 1.016 mm and the bars are 32 mm high. The symbol made here is about 152 mm wide including quiet zones and bearer frame. GS1 allows a narrow bar down to 0.495 mm.
ITF-14 or GS1-128 for cartons?
ITF-14 when the carton only needs its GTIN-14. GS1-128 when it also needs a batch, an expiry date or a shipment number (SSCC).
