Which barcode format do you need?

Retail products carry an EAN or UPC, the barcode form of a GTIN. Cartons and pallets use ITF-14 or GS1-128, and anything you only scan in your own warehouse can use plain Code 128. GTIN vs UPC vs EAN explains the numbers behind the first three.

Only use numbers you own

This generator draws the bars for a number. It does not issue GTINs, and nobody but GS1 can. A real EAN or UPC starts with a company prefix that a GS1 member organization licensed to the brand owner, such as GS1 Nederland, GS1 Germany, GS1 France or GS1 US.

Made-up numbers fail where it counts. Amazon checks product IDs against GS1 data and can remove listings whose code belongs to another company, Google Merchant Center flags invalid GTINs, and on bol.com an EAN that belongs to someone else attaches your offer to their product. Our guide What is an EAN number? shows how to get real codes and how to look one up.

Scanners need the light margin on both sides of the bars, the quiet zone. The generator always includes it, so don't crop the file. At 100% an EAN-13 is 37.29 mm wide including quiet zones, with bars 22.85 mm high.

  • Scale EAN and UPC codes between 80% and 200% of the nominal size. Smaller codes fail at the till.
  • Don't shorten the bars to fit a design. GS1 only allows that for products that are never scanned at a checkout.
  • Print dark bars on a light background. Red, orange and yellow bars disappear under the red light most scanners use.
  • Use SVG or PDF for packaging artwork: they are vector files that stay sharp at any size. PNG at 300 or 600 dpi suits label printers.
  • Scan a test print before a full print run. Your GS1 organization can verify print quality if a retailer asks for a grade.

Bulk barcodes from a list or CSV

Paste one code per line, or upload a CSV: the generator reads the first column and skips a header row such as "ean" or "gtin". Every line is checked on its own, so one bad code doesn't stop the batch, and the ZIP holds one SVG, PNG or PDF per valid code, named after the code.

A bulk run takes up to 500 codes. For a whole catalog it is usually better to keep GTINs in your product data, where they are checked on every change.

From one barcode to a whole catalog

In WISEPIM, Quality Guard checks the GTIN on every product: it blocks a GTIN with a wrong check digit and flags missing and duplicate codes before a channel rejects them. Like this generator and the EAN and GTIN validator, it checks the check digit, not GS1 registration. With EAN and barcode enrichment, an EAN also starts a cited web search that fills in specs and images.

One barcode is easy. A catalog of GTINs needs checking.

WISEPIM's Quality Guard checks the GTIN on every product, blocks wrong check digits and flags missing and duplicate codes before Amazon, bol.com or Google reject them.

Frequently asked questions

Is this barcode generator free?

Yes. You can make and download as many barcodes as you need, as SVG, PNG or PDF, without an account. Bulk runs take up to 500 codes per ZIP.

Does this tool give me an EAN or UPC number?

No. It draws a barcode for a number you already have. Real EAN and UPC numbers come from GS1: you license a company prefix from the GS1 organization in your country and number your products from it.

Can I sell products with a barcode I made up?

A made-up number scans, but it is not yours. Amazon checks product IDs against GS1 data, Google Merchant Center flags invalid GTINs, and retailers expect codes licensed to your brand. Use numbers from your own GS1 company prefix.

Which file type should I use for printing?

Use SVG or PDF for packaging and print shops, because both are vector files that stay sharp at any size. Use PNG at 300 or 600 dpi for label printers and documents.

Do my codes leave my computer?

No. The barcodes are drawn in your browser and the files are built there too. The numbers you type or upload are not sent to WISEPIM.

Why does the generator change my last digit?

It doesn't change it. When you enter a full code with a wrong last digit, it shows the check digit that would be correct and draws nothing until you fix it. When you leave the check digit out, it calculates and adds it.
