How a UPC-A is built
A UPC-A is a GTIN-12. GS1 US licenses the company prefix, you number your products after it, and the last digit is a check digit. Put a 0 in front and the same number is a valid EAN-13, which is why one code works in shops worldwide.

UPC-E: the zero-suppressed UPC
UPC-E squeezes a UPC-A into 6 digits plus the number system and check digit, for packs too small for a full barcode. It only works for UPCs that start with 0 and have zeros in the right places. Enter a 12-digit UPC-A with UPC-E selected and the generator compresses it, or tells you the number has no UPC-E form.

UPC size and print specs
UPC-A uses the same module width as EAN-13. Keep the quiet zones and the full bar height, and scale between 80% and 200%.

UPC or EAN?
Use the code your GS1 organization gives you. A US company gets 12-digit UPCs from GS1 US; a European company gets 13-digit EANs. Scanners in North America have read EAN-13 since 2005, so a European brand doesn't need a separate UPC to sell in the US. One barcode is easy. A catalog of GTINs needs checking.

Frequently asked questions
How do I get a UPC number?
License a company prefix from GS1 US (or the GS1 organization where your company is based) and number your products from it. This generator then draws the barcode. It does not issue UPC numbers.
Can I turn a UPC-A into a UPC-E?
Only when the UPC-A starts with 0 and has its zeros in one of the four zero-suppression patterns. Select UPC-E and enter the 12-digit UPC-A: the generator converts it or tells you it has no UPC-E form.
Is a UPC the same as an EAN?
Both are GTINs from GS1. A UPC has 12 digits and an EAN-13 has 13; a UPC with a 0 in front is a valid EAN-13 for the same product.
What size should a UPC barcode be?
At 100% a UPC-A is 37.29 mm wide including quiet zones, with bars 22.85 mm high. GS1 allows 80% to 200% of that size.
