What is UNSPSC? (Definition)

The UNSPSC is a global system used to classify products and services. It provides a standard way for businesses to label items so everyone uses the same language. GS1 US manages this system. The system uses an eight-digit code divided into four levels: Segment, Family, Class, and Commodity. Companies can add a fifth level called Business Function for specific needs. This code helps companies group similar items across their entire supply chain. It works even if different suppliers use different names for the same product. Each pair of digits in the code represents one level. For example, the code 43211503 represents a laptop. The first two digits (43) identify the broad category of Information Technology. The next pairs narrow the item down to computer equipment, then computers, and finally notebook computers. This structure helps businesses organize data for reports.
