Managed by GS1 US, it uses an eight-digit hierarchical structure consisting of four levels: Segment, Family, Class, and Commodity. An optional fifth level, Business Function, can be added for specific procurement requirements. This system allows organizations to identify and group similar items across their entire supply chain, regardless of the manufacturer or vendor terminology. Each two-digit pair in the eight-digit code represents a specific level of the hierarchy. For example, in the code 43211503 (Laptop), 43 represents Information Technology Broadcasting and Telecommunications (Segment), 21 represents Computer Equipment and Accessories (Family), 15 represents Computers (Class), and 03 represents Notebook Computers (Commodity). This logical progression ensures that data can be rolled up for high-level reporting or drilled down for granular inventory analysis.
For e-commerce businesses, particularly those operating in the B2B sector, UNSPSC codes are essential for interoperability between different systems. Many large enterprises and government agencies require suppliers to provide UNSPSC codes in their product feeds to facilitate automated procurement processes. When a B2B buyer uses an e-procurement system like SAP Ariba or Coupa, they rely on these codes to enforce spending limits, manage contracts, and analyze purchasing patterns across various departments.
