EAN and UPC lookup: find the product behind a barcode

Enter an EAN, UPC or GTIN and see which product carries it: name, brand, category and the public pages that list the code. A beta that searches the web, not the GS1 database, so every answer shows its sources and links Verified by GS1.

Look up a barcode

Beta

Enter an EAN, UPC or GTIN. We check the check digit, then search public web pages for the product that carries this exact code.

How the barcode lookup works

A barcode number (GTIN) doesn't describe a product by itself. The company that licensed it from GS1 decides which product it goes on, and the official product data sits with that company and, for many brands, in GS1's registry. There's no free public database that covers every barcode.

This lookup first checks the check digit, so a mistyped code never gets searched. It then searches public web pages, such as shops and manufacturer pages, for this exact number and only shows a product when the pages it found agree. It lists those pages so you can open and check them.

When no page shows the code, or the pages name different products, you get an honest 'not found' instead of a guess. Answers are kept for 30 days, so a code someone already looked up comes back at once and doesn't count toward your daily lookups.

For the authoritative record, use Verified by GS1: it shows the company that licensed the barcode. The GS1 prefix shown under the field tells you which GS1 office issued the company number, which isn't always the country where the product is made.

One barcode is quick. A supplier feed needs Web Research.

WISEPIM's Web Research takes an EAN, UPC, MPN or model number, runs a cited web search for each product and fills only the fields you allow. Run it on one SKU while you test, then on a whole import.

Frequently asked questions

How do I look up a UPC or EAN code?

Type or paste the barcode number above. The tool checks the check digit, then searches public web pages for the product that carries that exact number and shows the name, brand, category and the pages it found. For the official record, open the code in Verified by GS1.

Is this the official GS1 database?

No. It's web research over public pages such as shops and manufacturer sites, so it can be wrong or out of date. Verified by GS1 is the authoritative source for who licensed a barcode, and every result links to it.

Why does it say 'not found'?

Either no public page shows this exact number, or the pages name different products. The lookup doesn't guess in that case. Many barcodes are only in the brand owner's own records, so check Verified by GS1 or ask the supplier.

What's the difference between UPC, EAN and GTIN?

They're all GTINs, the GS1 product numbers. UPC-A has 12 digits and is used mainly in the US and Canada, EAN-13 has 13 digits and is used in most other countries, and GTIN-14 adds a packaging level. A UPC is an EAN-13 with a leading zero, so the lookup treats both as the same code.

What does the GS1 prefix tell me?

The first digits show which GS1 member organization issued the company number, for example 87 for GS1 Netherlands. It says where the brand owner registered, not where the product was made.

Is it free, and how many codes can I look up?

It's free and needs no account. During the beta you get 3 new lookups a day. A code someone already looked up in the last 30 days comes from the cache and doesn't count.

Can I look up barcodes for a whole catalog?

Yes, in WISEPIM. Web Research takes an EAN, UPC, MPN or model number per product, runs a cited web search and fills only the fields you allow, for one SKU or a whole supplier feed.
